About

To our readers,

A new day in local journalism

Journalism is at a crossroads in today’s world of social media, the Internet, and the political assault on “Fake News.” Journalism has shifted towards speed and what gets clicks for the purpose of advertisement. This has caused a loss of accuracy, storytelling, passion and earnestness from our local writers. Budgets have been slashed at prominent newspapers and the local television news has become watered down or bought out by mega media corporations. However, people still crave information and look for news. New research has shown that long form writing, story-telling news is what grabs our attention nowadays.

Comunidad SoCal seeks to help redefine what local printed news coverage can look like. It will tell news not with the speed of a bullet, but the patience of the pen. It will also focus on communities and people and a language that has remains underrepresented and neglected despite a new demographic reality.

This web magazine is focused on urban planning, community development and other local policy, arts, entertainment and athletic stories. However, the essence of these stories will be about gente, or the peoplethat are affected.

Gente.  Latino use the word to describe regular folks. Not the privileged, not the people “in the know” but the people who are just living their everyday lives. As our neighborhoods, towns and cities become more and more Latino, for some reason this perspective is left out entirely. It is time to bring something with a perspective that does not fail to miss out on an important part of the fabric of this region. It is important, as well, that we do the storytelling ourselves.

Please support us as we start literally from nothing. On this site you will find just a small sample of the stories we will provide. For the full picture, please considering purchasing a subscription of our yearly, digital magazine and consider downloading our podcasts. Through these actions you can support good journalism again, and allow us to make a living telling other people’s stories so that we can become a more informed and connected society.

Thank You,

Comunidad SoCal
